Meanwhile, see some of the most frequently asked questions we hear about CEREC—the best dental restorations in Somerset, KY—below.

What is CEREC?

CEREC is an acronym for “chairside economical restoration of (a)esthetic ceramics.” In most cases, CEREC restorations are made from a single block of porcelain, which means it’s stronger and more natural looking than other types of restorations.

This technology allows our dentist Dr. Michael Pope to create or oversee the creation of the best crown or restoration for your smile. This also means dental crowns created quickly in Somerset, KY!  No temporaries. No waiting weeks for your crown to be ready.

How does CEREC technology work?

If you need a filling or crown, Dr. Michael Pope will take the traditional steps to remove any of your decayed or damaged tooth surface before placing your restoration. He will gently numb the area and remove bacteria, decay, or unstable tooth structure so that you can start fresh with your new restoration.

After a series of necessary and safe digital x-rays, we use the latest in CAD/CAM digital technology to scan and download information into specially designed dental software. Our software processes this digital data and creates a 3-D digital impression of your tooth that is exceptionally precise without the need for gummy impression material.

Once we have the digital impression of your tooth, we send the information to a specially designed machine that works with our software to mill your restoration out of a single block of ceramic.

Dr. Michael Pope will make sure that your ceramic restoration matches your tooth as precisely as possible. He will then secure it permanently to your tooth structure and make any final adjustments necessary to ensure a perfect fit with your adjacent and opposing teeth so that your restoration is both beautiful and comfortable.

No one will guess you have a restoration or that you have even been to the dentist.

What are the benefits of CEREC restorations compared to traditional restorations?

Invented in 1980, CEREC has been around for decades now and has continuously improved as new technology became available. In addition to eliminating the middleman and saving you time, CEREC has proven safe and effective for the creation of various types of restorations including:

  • Dental fillings—close your tooth after cavity therapy.
  • Dental crowns—go over an existing tooth to secure weakness or conceal flaws beautifully.
  • Inlays—fit inside the cusp tips of your tooth for cosmetic enhancement.
  • Onlays—fit over your tooth for better tooth appearance.
  • Veneers—fit over the fronts of teeth to provide a symmetrical and attractive smile.

Unlike metal crowns and fillings, ceramic is more biocompatible and provides greater aesthetics for our patients. With proper care, ceramic restorations are durable, reliable, and long-lasting.

CEREC restorations often save you money too, because we eliminate the need for a temporary crown and do not have to hire labor from a dental lab. That means a reduced fee that we pass on to you, while still offering the same reliable and attractive results.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cover that fits over a weak or damaged tooth to keep it strong. Dental crowns are also used to conceal flaws, close small gaps between teeth, and provide a more symmetrical smile.

Why do I need a CEREC crown instead of a filling?

Sometimes following a complex root canal or deep cavity, a filling is not sufficient to keep a tooth strong and viable. In this case, Dr. Michael Pope will recommend a crown instead of a filling. A crown means that you can eat many of your favorite foods again without worrying about breakage.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover that goes over your weakened tooth. It is colored and shaped to become one with your smile. It will not stand out or look different from your natural teeth.

I cracked my tooth. Can I still get a CEREC crown?

Dr. Michael Pope will evaluate your unique situation to determine whether a crown is right for you. He will also take the time to discuss the steps and answer any questions that you might have about the restoration process.

How do I care for my CEREC restorations?

Caring for your restoration requires a good oral hygiene program at home, which includes:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice daily
  • Flossing between teeth at least twice daily
  • Keeping gums clean

It’s also important to visit our Somerset, KY dental office at least twice per year for exams and dental cleanings.

A restoration will not prevent gum infections, periodontal disease, or dental emergencies. This is why exams and professional teeth cleanings are crucial to help maintain the integrity of your smile and keep your restorations in good order.

Does my insurance cover dental crowns?

Some insurance providers do cover dental crowns because they are sometimes necessary to keep a tooth in working order, especially following a failed root canal or trauma.

At Southern Dental Group, we also offer easy dental financing in Somerset, KY through CareCredit and Lending Club. These credit providers offer interest-free programs to help you get the care you want and need. Several of these lending programs even offer interest-free repayment options. In most cases, it only takes a few minutes to qualify for these credit plans.
