What is a Dental Bridge?

If you have a missing tooth, you are probably curious about your options to restore your health and your smile. While many patients opt for dental implants, other patients want to explore other options or do not qualify for dental implants due to a medical condition or certain medications.

For those patients, we offer dental bridges in our Somerset dental office. Dental bridges keep your teeth from shifting and complete your smile using a series of specialized dental crowns.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge uses your healthy adjacent teeth to anchor an artificial tooth in place.

The two crowns on your healthy adjacent teeth are called abutment crowns. Your artificial tooth is called a pontic crown. The abutment crowns suspend your pontic crown in place and act as a placeholder for your missing tooth. When you leave a gap in your smile untreated, your remaining teeth may shift and tilt toward the gap and affect the integrity of your bite.

The upside of having a dental bridge is that they are a relatively affordable way to replace a missing tooth. We create dental bridges for both function and esthetics. You dental bridge will blend in with your smile, giving it a natural appearance that allows greater confidence when you smile and speak.

Downsides to the fixed dental bridge include the need to prep two healthy teeth for dental crowns. That means the removal of healthy tooth structure in order to make space for your dental crowns. Bridges also require special care to keep them clean. You will need to remove food particles from around your bridge in order to keep your teeth and gums healthy. We can help with suggestions to make caring for your dental bridge easier.
